Enamelled public toilets – Attractive, safe, durable

It’s the exterior of a building that makes the first impression on people and contributes to the overall feeling of its surrounding environment. There is thus always a thought process about material choices when we design public toilet buildings. It is not just the interior of a public toilet that has to be easy to maintain – we take responsibility for keeping the whole building clean, safe and in good repair.

We have been working with public toilets for over 50 years, and we are constantly trying to find smart new ways of creating durable, attractive toilet buildings. There are many ways to do so. Enamelling became an important method for us back in the 1980s. Since 2019 we have been using modern technology to digitally print our enamel facades.

Product development with a focus on durable public toilets

Public toilet buildings lead a tough life in some settings. This is a basic insight that grounds our product development process. It’s why we work with enamelled sheet metal. Enamel has an incredibly hard surface. That’s why pressure washing with hot water is so effective when we clean our toilet buildings. Colours don’t incur damage or fade the same way as those of a painted wood facade, which has to be repainted every five years. Nor does enamelled sheet metal need an anti-graffiti coating.

When public toilets are damaged

Enamel is hard, but it’s not impermeable. This is why we install enamelled panels on our toilet buildings. Instead of having to restore an entire building, we can remove a damaged panel and replace it with a new one. With our Danfo360 operations and maintenance concept, public toilet buildings are in safe hands, with daily inspection and rapid response guaranteeing safe, secure, durable public toilets.

Should a public toilet fit in or stand out?

A public toilet should contribute to an accessible, inclusive environment. Sometimes you want it to fit into its surroundings, and sometimes it’s appropriate to create something that stands out a bit more. In Helsingborg, Sweden, for example, we have toilets with historical, jungle, dinosaur and forest themes. If you have an idea, we can turn it into a reality in cooperation with our partners.
